SPACE HAM is an episode of the Between the Ears series on BBC Radio 3. I was commissioned as Sound Artist to collaborate with producer Rose de Larrabeiti from Whistledown Productions.
From BBC Radio 3 website:
Since the dawn of the Space Age, amateur “ham” radio has eavesdropped on our exploration of the cosmos. From Sputnik to the International Space Station, radio enthusiasts with homemade kit have been able tune into the distant sounds of space and talk to those exploring it. Caroline Devine, found space-sound artist, creates a composition from the ethereal sounds of space and the space hams and sends Between the Ears into orbit.
Interwoven with these are Caroline Devine’s artful reworking of other cosmic sounds picked up by ham receivers from across the world to create an ethereal and magical journey, a momentary re-ignition of the childlike wonder of space.

5 Minute Oscillations of the Sun
5 minute Oscillations of the Sun is an 8 channel sound installation that explores naturally occurring radio signals and solar activity. Sited in a dome in Milton Keynes Theatre District for five weeks from 21st June, the composition alternates between acoustic and electromagnetic listening modes, providing an opportunity to “eavesdrop on the sun”. The acoustic modes comprise sine wave compositions derived from data on the natural resonances present within the interior of the sun. The data was provided courtesy of the BiSON research team at Birmingham University. These compositions are interspersed with passages of VLF radio signals, kindly provided by Paul Nicholson and Wolf Buescher. The dome acts as an acoustic lens, focusing and amplifying the tiny sounds which can be clearly heard at it’s centre.
This clip drifts between a recording made within the dome and the original composition.
Carrier Waves, left and right channels
Carrier Waves is my soundwork for the Station X installation installed initially at MK Gallery Project Space and subsequently as part of Arthertz Ghost Stations in Hut 8 at Bletchley Park. The composition is made from acoustic and electromagnetic recordings made in and around the derelict blocks C and D over a period of a year.
Oscillate is a composition derived from data courtesy of the BiSON research team, Birmingham University on the natural resonances present within the interior of the sun. Oscillate was commissioned by the ICA for the Soundworks project that coincides with Bruce Nauman’s “Days”.
Recording Contract Recordings at Milton Keynes Gallery
The sound installation, Recording Contract Recordings has been an opportunity for me to work with various spaces in and around the gallery and to use those spaces as an element of composition. The main sound installation is situated in the cube gallery. Every 35 minutes, a section of the piece is broadcast simultaneously inside the cube and “through the walls” into the public square, connecting inside and outside space. The outside section consists of tiny piano fragments recorded within the body of the piano and diffused through horn speakers into the square. Listen to a clip from inside the cube gallery here…
and a recording from the square outside here…
